  • [dec of griffith yale ap einion.GED]     Received his education  inthe public schools of Ithaca, NY and then learned the baker's tradeand the baking business. While still a young man he established hisown bakery, which he conducted in connection with a grocery businessand a confectionery shop. He was regarded by his associates as a manpossessed of sound judgement, keen discernment, and pronouncedinitiative. He was one of the founders of hte Ithaca Savings Bank in1863, and from 1883 until his death was its president. He was one ofthe founders of the Incorporated Schools of Ithaca in 1874, and in1875 became a member of the school board. He was a Trustee of theVillage of Ithaca, first elected in 1849. In 1862 he was elected asupervisor of the town, and in 1868 became an incorporator of thewaterworks. In 1881 he purchased a fine brick mansion on South Aurora,where he died on 13 March 1896. His obituary in the Ithaca Journalsaid of him: "To the needy he was a liberal giver, as hundreds of poorpeople in the City can testify, and his acts were always performedostentation. In his domestic relations he was generous and loving. Inhis habits and manners he was exceedingly plain. He was greatlyrespected by all who knew him. He had an abhorence of deceit in everyform, and for honesty and fair dealing he had no superior. As a markof respect every store in the City closed during the hour of hisfuneral."
